Praying Robber Did It Again

The Praying Robber, who appeared on the Oprah Winfrey show today with his mother,  wife and daughter, has been caught on tape holding up a second check cashing place. He had been caught on tape involved in a bizarre robbery in which he hugged and prayed with a frightened store clerk , which was aired nationwide on T.V.,was charged Thursday in another robbery last week.

In store cameras caught 23-year-old Gregory Smith holding a gun on an employee of a Pay Day Loan at 38th and Massachusetts Avenue October 14. He faces charges related to that robbery.

Meanwhile, the armed robbery suspect  appeared in a Marion County court for another robbery. The judge entered a not guilty plea on his behalf.  The security video from this week’s east side check cashing store has now made national headlines.

And Greg Smith said it’s him seen in the security video attempting to rob the Advance America store on East Washington Street in Indianapolis. He said while he was robbing the store, the store employee Angela Montez began to cry, and he did too. He said he was feeling remorseful about what he was doing.

He was surprised by what Angela Montez did next.

He said she prayed over me. He said that Montez asked God to forgive him for what he was doing.  In the store security video, Montez and Smith can be seen on their knees and hugging each other. Montez told dispatchers Smith even took the bullets out of the gun and gave it to her to show her he wasn’t going to shoot her.

Smith said he robbed the store because he was desperate. He said he hasn’t had a job in over a year and was facing an eviction and possibly being homeless. He also said he worried for his 2-year-old daughter and his girlfriend.

When that case garnered media attention, workers at the Payday Loan business at 38th Street and Massachusetts Avenue said they recognized Smith as the man who had robbed their business the week before.

On the Oprah Winfrey show Friday Smith apologized to Montez live on the show. Montez says she accepts Smith’s apology and that she was worried about him before he turned himself into police on Tuesday.

Smith remains held without bond in the Marion County Jail.

  1. Robbing a good Christian woman who works as a money lender for a company that specializes in legal loan sharking, usury, and exploitive business behavior…terrible, tsk, tsk.

  2. Does anyone know what has happened to this guy and more importantly, his family subsequently?
