Poisonous And Deadly Adolescent Egyptian Cobra Escapes From The Bronx Zoo In New York…Citizens Alerted To Watch Out For The Killer Snake Roaming The Streets!!!
Authorities for the Reptile House at the Bronx Zoo have released a statement warning the public of the impending danger posed by the escape of the deadly Egyptian Cobra from his off-exhibit enclosure on Saturday.(ABC)
The reptile house was closed after a staff member noticed that an adolescent Egyptian cobra was missing from his enclosure, and they could not find the venomous snake.(Gothamist)
“After learning the snake was missing yesterday afternoon, we immediately closed and secured the building as we took steps throughout the evening to recover the snake,” the statement read.(NY Mag)

The statement continues….”Based on our knowledge of the natural history and behavior of snakes, we know they seek closed-in spaces and are not comfortable in open areas.(HuffPo)
We are confident that the snake, about 20 inches long, is contained in a non-public, isolation area within the building.
We are informing the public out of an abundance of caution and will continue to take whatever steps necessary to ensure public safety.
We are making this information public through the media, bronxzoo.com and at our ticket windows.(CBS)
The Reptile House will be closed until further notice…
According to wildlife experts, the Egyptian cobra is most commonly found in North Africa, and its venom is so deadly that it can kill a full-grown elephant in three hours , or a large human being in about 15 minutes or less.(Source)
Jim Breheny, Senior Vice President for the Wildlife Conservation Society and Director of the Bronx Zoo stated…”When the snake gets hungry or thirsty it will start to move around the building. Once that happens, it will be our best opportunity to recover it.”
The venom destroys nerve tissue and causes paralysis and death due to respiratory failure. The venom quantity can reach 175 to 200 mg in a single bite, stopping nerve signals to the muscles, heart and lungs!!!(Source)
Scholars believe the Egyptian cobra was known in ancient times as the asp. Legend has it that Cleopatra, the ancient Egyptian queen, used an asp to commit suicide.
So, unless you are the Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin or his daughter Bindi…if you see this snake or one that resembles this snake and you are in the Bronx,or live close to the Bronx Zoo…RUN!!!

Same story in Atlanta last August–right down to zoo officials being convinced snake would hide in zoo building.
But it didn’t turn out that way: http://tinyurl.com/4wh278m

Thanks for the link to that story…the same people that claim that everyone will be safe, are the same people responsible for letting the snake get out in the first place!
