15 children and two adults were taken to a local hospital after an amusement park miniature train derailed and killed a 6-year old boy at Cleveland Park on Saturday Spartanburg,South Carolina.(Source)

Spartanburg, S.C. officials say a miniature train was in its first day of operation for the season when it overturned, killing the boy and sending dozens of children and parents to the hospital.(USA Today)

The train had just been inspected for safety, and was cleared to operate with passengers by the Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation.(Source)

In the aftermath of the tragic and horrific death of the young boy, the LLR held a news conference Monday afternoon saying that one of the agency’s inspectors falsified an inspection report done last week on the miniature train, and that the inspection of the train could not have been conducted because the battery on the train was dead, so the inspector could not have tested it and lied about having done so.(Source)

The Spartanburg police originally said that the inspection records appeared to be in order, before this admission of impropriety by the LLR’s 20 year veteran investigator.(Source)

When the regulator’s become too cozy with those that they are supposed to oversee, then that is when these types of tragedies occur. I hope that the investigator is held accountable for this death and all of these injuries, as a criminal offense in a court of law.
