Mike Starr had an ongoing multiple decades long battle with drug addiction, and heroin was his drug of choice. As a cast member on the 3rd season of VH1′s’ Celebrity Rehab’ series, hosted by addiction expert Dr. Drew Pinsky, he revealed that the first time he shot up with heroin was with Kurt Cobain of the band ‘Nirvana’ and the lead singer of his group ‘Alice In Chains’ Layne Staley.(Source)
Mike told Dr. Drew that Layne Staley shot him up with heroin the first time he did it,on the day they kicked him out of the band, and then Kurt shot him up a few times after that.
Layne Staley died of a heroin overdose in 2002, at the age of 34.Mike Starr was the last person to see him alive, and always had a bad conscience over the fact that he thought that had he been more responsible and not high on the drugs that he had taken, he would have called 911 to come and save the life of Layne who was sick and dying from the drugs, but he did not.(MTV)
He said that after Layne called him to come by to help him out,he showed up drugged out,and Layne scolded him for being so high,so Mike left him there.(Source)
Layne died later that day.
He blamed himself for the death of Layne, and spent the rest of his days punishing himself for the death of his friend.
Kurt Cobain died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head on April 8,1993.He had killed himself on the 5th of April, and it took a few days to discover his body, as he was alone in his home at the time.
Alice in Chains shot to fame in the early 1990s rose to international fame as part of the grunge movement of the early 1990s, along with other Seattle bands such as Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden.
The band was one of the most successful music acts of the 1990s, selling over 25 million albums worldwide, and over 12 million in the US alone.
The band achieved two number-one Billboard 200 albums (Jar of Flies and Alice in Chains), 14 top ten songs on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, and eight Grammy Award nominations.. Starr left the group soon after the release of its 1992 album, “Dirt.”(WIKI)
Starr was the original bassist for Alice in Chains. He left the group in 1993 after being fired for his substance abuse issues.
Mike Starr also revealed on Celeb Rehab that he had done drugs with his father, which was a shocking revelation to many viewers, because that is contradictory to what we know to be good parenting.(Source)
In fact, it explained a lot about the depths of Mike’s addiction, and it’s root causes, which makes this statement released yesterday by Mike’s father, very suspicious…”"It’s a terrible shock and tragedy.”
Unfortunately for all of Mike’s fans and supporters who knew his music from AIC, and the new fans who were rooting for Mike’s recovery from his stand out appearance as a patient on Celebrity Rehab.
Dr. Drew has little success in rehabbing celebrities on his series, because many former patients relapse immediately after the show finishes the season.(Jason Davies Arrested For Drug Possession)
Dr. Drew Pinsky, the host of Celebrity Rehab, responded to Starr’s death with a note on Twitter that read: “Devastating to hear of Mike Starr succumbing to his illness. So very sad. Our prayers are with his family.”(People)
Guitarist Jerry Cantrell and drummer Sean Kinney released a statement that same day, saying, “Jerry and Sean are mourning the loss of their friend and ask that the media respect their privacy – and the privacy of Mike’s family – during this difficult time. Their thoughts & prayers are with the Starr family.”
I like Mike Starr, and I was pulling for him to recover from his sickness.I am sorry to hear of his death, and I send my condolences to his family and friends.(Source)
