Crazy Thai Art Teacher Caught On Cell Phone Video Smacking Naughty Students With Cane!!!…Probably Not An Effective Teaching Strategy For The Arts.
As an art teacher myself,I strive to make art education as fun, yet effective as humanly possible for the students, and I am mindful of the fact that each student will have a different style of learning that is effective for them.
Teaching students of any age, in general, requires patience and strong leadership, and we instructors must know when to step back and maintain our authoritative composure when presented with a student that may require discipline.
If an instructor loses their composure, then you have lost the class!
We all know that the discipline that we are allowed to mete out,in no way shape or form, will ever be physical, and one should only expect an assault charge by the authorities, followed by the loss the teaching job, if that line is ever crossed.
Fear of a teacher physically beating down a student can only poison the learning atmosphere, and create a culture of intimidation, when the culture should only be about education. If a teacher feels like they have to resort to corporal punishment for any reason with a student, then the teaching strategy of the instructor should be altered.
In America, most high school students, and probably middle school as well, would retaliate against a physical attack by fighting back against a teacher, escalating the situation into chaos, and nothing good can ever come from such altercations.

Students must feel safe to make mistakes in school,so education can be fostered, but the teacher must be held to a higher standard.
The AP is reporting that secretly recorded cell phone footage has exposed a teacher at a Catholic boarding school in northeastern Thailand caught in the act whacking dozens of students,40 in all, on the buttocks using a cane wrapped with electrical wire!!!
…what kind of sadistic madness is this?!?!..and what could a child possibly do in an art class anywhere in the world to deserve such extreme punishment?
My professional advice to this Thai art teacher is to find another profession!!!
I prefer positive reinforcement in my art classes, and if a student becomes unruly for some reason, generally a bad critique on an art piece, then I simply ask the student to leave the class and request that they return once they have calmed down.
If that does not work, then I have to call security to assist the student in their calming down process, and I leave it at that.
Art teacher Somchai Limthanmaporn apparently went ballistic when he found out that his students had not cleaned their dormitory, and this was his reason to cane and beat the children.
My question is, don’t most kids tend to keep a messy room from time to time?…and what business does an art teacher have with the students dorms?
An administrator at St. Mary’s School in the northeastern province of Nakhon Ratchasima has reported that Art teacher Somchai Limthanmaporn was fired for beating the 40 students, and that he may face criminal prosecution, which they will not defend him in, if a case is filed.
Parents of the students at St. Mary’s have already filed complaints with police over the beatings, and that Thailand’s Education Ministry prohibits any inhuman or violent punishment and only allows the use of verbal warnings, probation and termination in the event that teachers have evidence to warrant punishing their students.(SOURCE)
Apparently Thailand has had an old tradition of corporal punishment in their school’s, which used to be sanctioned by the government, but the practice has been outlawed. This is a classic case of the old ways clashing with the modern times.(WIKI)
Authorities are investigating the case to determine if criminal prosecution is warranted.
My advice to the students is that the next time this happens, realize that 40 students against one teacher with a cane whip means that the odds are in your favor….
…and do not ever let any person,no matter who they are, whip you without fighting back!!!
Art class should be fun and inspirational…not scary and physically intimidating!!!
