The First Full-Face Transplant Unveiled!!!…Amazing Right!

Today, medical science took a leap when the public got to meet the first full-face transplant patient Oscar, a Spanish farmer who lost most of his face in a 2005 accidental shotgun blast, appeared for the first time publicly July 26, 2010 at a news conference at the Vall d’Hebron Hospital in Barcelona.

The 31-year-old, who had been unable to breathe, swallow or talk properly after suffering an accident five years ago, thanked hospital staff and the donor’s family.

ABC.com reports that…During the 24-hour surgery in March, doctor’s lifted the donor’s entire face – the jaw, nose, cheekbones, teeth, eyelids, muscles, nerves and blood vessels, placing it mask-like onto Oscar’s face.

He is still swollen and needs more than a year of therapy, but doctors say he should regain up to 90 per cent of his facial functions.(SOURCE)

Oscar’s sister, who was not named, said: “We are very happy and content and very grateful to the hospital because now he can start his new life.

The doctors who performed the surgery reassured the assembled media, that Oscar’s face does not resemble the donor at all.
