The AP is reporting…Woodson died Sunday in southern California after battling cancer, Motown Alumni Association President Billy Wilson said. Wilson said Woodson’s wife, Juanita, told him about the death Sunday.
Woodson left The Temptations in 1996 after suffering two bouts of throat cancer. He went on to start a solo career and form his own group, Ali-Ollie Woodson & the Emperors of Soul.
Woodson replaced lead singer Dennis Edwards in 1984,and he co-wrote, co-produced and sang lead on the 1984 Temptations single “Treat Her Like a Lady”, which was a #2 hit on the U.S. R&B charts. His last Temptations album was 1995’s For Lovers Only.(WIKI)
According to Wikipedia,in late 2008, Woodson was diagnosed with leukemia and hospitalized for several weeks. Woodson died in southern California on May 30, 2010 after battling leukemia for nearly eighteen months.
I had the pleasure to meet Ali-Ollie Woodson on a few occasions that I attended parties and functions with my good friend the O.G.Poetess, co-host of the Jamie Foxx “Foxxhole” radio program that airs on the Sirius satellite radio network every Friday afternoon.
He would deliver a rousing performance, and then mingle with the audience, and my interactions with him left me with a good impression of how a gifted celebrity could be such a fine gentleman.
The last performance I got to see him at was recently in January, at a tribute to the Poetess father, Johnny Morris, at the Conga Room at L.A. Live in downtown L.A.
He performed on-stage with Lenny Williams, Stevie Wonder, a reunited Tone Tone Tone,Jamie Foxx, among others, and all of us that were in attendance knew we were witnessing history in the making that night on the stage at the Conga Room.
Ali-Ollie Woodson was one of the best soul and R&B singers even on that illustrious stage, and his voice and his presence on the stage will forever be missed.
Rest in peace Mr. Woodson….and thanks for all that good music you have left behind for us to all enjoy!!!!
