Former NBA star Jayson Williams was sentenced to five years in prison Tuesday for fatally shooting a hired limo driver in 2002, ending an eight-year legal odyssey by tearfully apologizing to the victim’s family. He will be eligible for parole in 18 months.
Jayson Williams killed limo driver Costas ”Gus” Christofi on Feb. 14, 2002 while recklessly playing with a loaded shotgun in the bedroom of his mansion.

He was lucky that only one person was killed ,and William’s had previous run in’s with the authorities for a violent assault and a gun charge….In 1992, Williams was accused of breaking a beer mug over a patron’s head at a saloon in Chicago. Two years later, he was accused of firing a semiautomatic weapon into the parking lot at the Meadowlands Sports Complex. He was never criminally charged in either case.(SOURCE)
At a 2004 trial, he was acquitted of aggravated manslaughter but convicted on four counts of covering up the shooting.
In court today, a tearful Williams turned and apologized to the victim’s sister, saying “There’s not a day I wake up that I don’t feel sorry for what I did.”
Williams paid the victim’s family more than $2 million in 2003 to settle a wrongful death lawsuit.
Thus ends the sad saga and downfall of former N.BA. star millionaire and on-air sports analyst, Jayson Williams…for now at least….
