Gaines Adams,26,Chicago Bears Player,Dies Of Natural Causes

The AP is reporting that Chicago Bears Defensive End Gaines Adams died Sunday morning of cardiac arrest resulting from an enlarged heart, according to Greenwood County, S.C., chief deputy coroner Marcia Kelley-Clark.

The 26-year-old Adams was taken to the emergency room at Self Regional Healthcare at 7:14 a.m. Eastern time and pronounced dead at 8:21 a.m., Kelley-Clark said. Adams, who is from Greenwood, was visiting his girlfriend.

The Greenwood County Coroner, Jim Coursey, said the cause of death is cardiac arrest due to an enlarged heart.

“We are stunned and saddened by the news of Gaines’ passing,” the Bears said in a statement. “Our prayers are with his family during this difficult time.”

ESPN.com reports that ...Adams, the fourth-overall pick in the 2007 NFL draft, was the traded before the 2009 season to the Bears from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for a 2010 second-round pick. The former Clemson star played 47 games in his three-year NFL career, recording 13.5 sacks. In his senior season at Clemson, Adams was named a first team All-American by the Associated Press as well as tying the all-time sack lead in Tigers history with 28 over the course of his career.

The NFL Network reports that Adams was experiencing “health issues” Sunday morning, and his girlfriend called for an ambulance. Adams arrived at the hospital just after 8 a.m. ET and was pronounced dead in the emergency room at 8:21 a.m.

Adams had no history of health problems, so an autopsy and a toxicology report are planned to determine the cause of death.
