I love it when African-Americans can yet again show our physical prowess on the field of battle in sport. Better yet,is when we excel at the elite sports that have traditionally been the exclusive territory for non-black people.

Remember when Tiger Woods got us all in to golf, finally, as well as the Williams sisters got us into tennis a lot more.I still do not watch hockey, but my  friends who do, tell me of a black goalie, who is the best in the sport.

I have also become aware of some Olympic level fencers who are teaching urban youth how to fence, so that will become another sport for us to take over as well.

To that end, today we are pleased to report that Olympic Speedskating champion, Shani Davis, has broken the 3-year-old track record for the 1,500 meters today at Heerenveen, the Netherlands while competing in the World Cup of Speedskating championships.

Davis finished in 1 minute 44.48 seconds, breaking the nearly three-year-old Thialf Stadium track record. Havard Bokko of Norway was second in 1:45.57, followed by Stefan Groothuis of the Netherlands.

Davis had set track records in the 1,500 and 1,000 last weekend in Berlin.

The following is a quote from Wikipedia about Chicagoan Shani Davis…

At the 2006 Winter Olympics, Davis became the first black athlete to win a gold medal in an individual sport (1,000 m) and the fifth black Winter Olympics medalist. He also won the silver in the 1,500 m. He won the all-round World all-round Championships in both 2005 and 2006, after winning the silver medal in 2004…

I salute all champions is sport, no matter the race, creed, or color, but I am personally proud of fellow African-American Shani Davis, who is the speed skating champion, a sport that is expensive, and has been mainly associated with athletes that are not black.

He is an American hero, and an African-American pioneer, that we all can be proud of.
